    The adult acorn woodpecker has a brownish-black head, back, wings and tail, white forehead, throat, belly and rump. Overall a good place to ride. A cheaper and better solution is to close the tunnel and put up a bike/ped bridge like the one used in Fairview Park, in Costa Mesa. Toyon is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats. From here onward you will be sharing the underpasses with horses. The biggest problem about mile marker 19.5 is the "hellhole" tunnel: deep and dark (despite lights). The trail is paved all the way. No concrete bottom to the river. It starts at the Base of the San Gabriel Mountains, passes through the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, and ends at Seal Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Tail hair is replaced only in the spring.

    Eschscholzia californica, also known as the Californian poppy, golden poppy, California sunlight, or cup of gold, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae, native to the United States and Mexico. It is a flowering perennial sending up many thin, erect stems and bearing distinctive long pointed leaves which are very narrow and often whorled about the stem, giving the plant its common names. This is a perfect way for coastal residents to safely get to the base of the San Gabriels. Some species are found in brooks and streams where there is fresh water running, while others thrive in swamps, ditches, and rice paddies.

    The flowers of Indian paintbrush are edible, and were consumed in moderation by various Native American tribes as a condiment with other fresh greens. As its distribution has been proven to be limited to one single site, it has one of the best claims to being the world's rarest butterfly.

    Ahead is a RR bridge and then the 91 Freeway. For those who love to hike along the water, the trail has visitors hiking along, through, and above the river. When I travel, I miss this trail! If any leaves are present, they are minute and scale-like.

    Rhamnus californica (syn. Just means that no one has updated the map with “Here There Be Parking” and other icons. Add to that a blind corner or two and it gets interesting. The path itself is windy and refreshing to the hundreds of hikers who visit on those hot summer Southern Californian days. If you are into horses, this is an option. 50 mile roundtrip from Whittier Narrows Park to Alamitos Bay riding along the San Gabriel River Trail.

    Here is a nature center with tables and exhibits. I spent about 7-10 trips to finish the whole. While many refer to scrub jays as "blue jays", the blue jay is a different species entirely. Recent research has suggested that scrub jays, along with several other corvids, are ranked among the most intelligent animals. The leaves and stems are full of volatile compounds that give it the scent. It won’t last. Nice path, nice view. The trail is a 7.6 mile moderate out-and-back trail.     The Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) is a large duck native to Mexico, Central, and South America. Lots of parking, restrooms, picnic area, water, etc. The San Gabriel River looks very clean and is very pretty. The bigleaf maple has the largest leaves of any maple, typically 6 to 12 inches across, with five deeply incised palmate lobes. The ears turn reddish-brown at the back in the winter. It begins from my home in Cypress, to the Beverly Manor access road alongside the 405 FWY, to the Coyote Creek Trail. While there are reports of coyotes attacking and killing a person, these types of incidents are extremely rare. The berries were also dried and stored, then later cooked into porridge or pancakes.

    Easy ride. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. The northern trailhead can be accessed from the San Gabriel River Parkway in Pico Rivera.

    Eriogonum fasciculatum is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common names California buckwheat and Eastern Mojave buckwheat. Indian paintbrush has similar health benefits to consuming garlic if only the flowers are eaten in small amounts and in moderation.

    In both sexes, the underside is gray with a  row of round spots of variable size depending upon region. It’s a great place to get out of the rain – nice wide porches on both sides wit benches.     Western gray squirrels exhibit a form of coloration known as counter shading. It blooms in clusters of lavender or lavender-tinted white flowers which have five reflexed lobes that extend down away from the blossom. It follows a giant dry concrete causeway/canal with homeless encampments and trash everywhere, then thru a power plant. Heading south, the trail runs along the east side of the San Gabriel "river"-- an historic watershed that is largely concreted on its way to the ocean. It is endemic to California, growing in the hot interior valleys and foothills.

    Crotalus viridis (Common names: prairie rattlesnake, western rattlesnake, plains rattlesnake, and others) is a venomous pit viper species native to the western United States, southwestern Canada, and northern Mexico. Western rattlesnakes live on the land, but it can sometimes climb in trees or bushes. And, “Yes, Virginia…” there is water and parking and restrooms and such along the trail (along with a skate park, assorted tennis courts, baseball diamonds, community centers, picnic pavilions, shopping centers and more).     As with any wild animal, if it feels threatened by someone coming toward it or chasing it, it may feel the need to protect itself. It is found in Baja California and Sonora in Mexico and in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Utah in the United States. This trail has multiple access points.     One of the many predators of tarantulas is the “tarantula hawk” which is really a large wasp. The trail crisscrosses over the San Gabriel River in several spots and passes by/through several parks along the way: a Frisbee golf course, a residential neighborhood, and a star gazing seating/viewing area. I ride this daily to my office. After shopping, cross at the light and take the sidewalk 0.2 miles to the entrance to the trail. (What a charming name!) It is the American counterpart to the very similar Old World little egret, which has established a foothold in the Bahamas. The park has a lot of facilities ranging from a Community Center right down past tennis courts, ball fields, a track and such to trailside parking, water, and restrooms – handy for the folks going up and down the SGRT just over the fence.

    California coffeeberry is cultivated by plant nurseries as an ornamental plant. where the concrete channel starts and continues to the sea. There is a beach access parking lot with restroom, water, restaurant and pay station at the Seal Beach side of the river where it meets the sea. I ride this trail every week and must say it's one of the best. Keep an eye out for floatsam and jetsam on in this underpass, also a homeless haven. It also attracts bees when flowering.

    Laurel sumac has adapted to fire return intervals of 50-100+ years in the chaparral areas where it grows, and after a fire burns its above ground parts, a large burl underground resprouts new stems and leaves.

    Rhus integrifolia, also known as lemonade berry, or lemonadeberry, is a shrub to small tree. In southern California, it is mainly found in relatively shady and wet areas. What counts was the ability to ride!!! Turns into the BB&PP across the river. Do not allow children and pets to consume.

    Brassica nigra (black mustard) is an annual, non-native weedy plant that has naturalized in southern California. The trail is safe from traffic, downhills, uphills. Parking is available at two trailheads in Azusa: a small parking lot is located near the trail's northern end on San Gabriel Canyon Road (State Route 39), while a much larger parking lot can be found off E. Foothill Boulevard. It is native to California and Oregon, where it grows along the coast and in dry and open meadows, prairies and forest clearings. Funding for this project was provided by the State of California, State Resources Agency. They have done a fine design job on this greenbelt. Water, restrooms and fee parking are inside the park.  The plant is not typically ingested unless other forage is unavailable, or the plant is incorporated into hay.
